In late May 2022, long-time Westford resident Rob O’Neal was diagnosed with Appendix Cancer - Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP). Since PMP is so rare, with just two or three in a million people diagnosed with it yearly, it does not receive the level of research dollars that other cancers do. We are hoping to do our part to increase awareness and raise funds, as well as to honor Rob as he continues to recover from multiple surgeries and get back to his life pre-diagnosis.
The current standard of care for this disease is a surgery ‘fondly’ known as the MOAS or Mother of All Surgeries. Rob underwent surgery in July 2022 at MGH in Boston, but once the surgeon opened him up he found that Rob’s case was too advanced for him to proceed. Fortunately, Rob found Dr. David Bartlett, a surgeon with the Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, who agreed to do the surgery. Rob had this 12-hour MOAS surgery on December 30, 2022, at the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. Though the recovery has been very challenging in many ways, Rob is progressing well and grows stronger each day. He and his family are so grateful for the wonderful care that he has received and are excited to raise money for this important cause! We hope you can join us!!
Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (ACPMP) Research Foundation is the only nonprofit organization completely dedicated to funding research for appendix cancer and PMP. ACPMP has funded 36 research grants totaling $1.695 million dollars. 100% of all funding comes from fundraisers created by patients, their families, and friends, as well as individual donations from family members in honor or memory of loved ones.
Education is another critical part of the ACPMP mission. The Foundation hosts a variety of events each year, including partnering with prominent institutions for our yearly multi-regional symposium, providing scholarships to medical professionals to attend relevant conferences, and hosting an Education Webinar Series with researchers and physicians to discuss new developments relating to appendix cancer. The Foundation also provides a wide range of resources online to support patients and their loved ones, offering personal one-on-one guidance whenever possible.
Appendix Cancer is a rare disease, but it has affected many. Please consider supporting; every dollar makes a difference in our fight against appendix cancer. We thank you for your participation to help make a difference!
