What people know as Candy Cane Lane began in 1995. When we moved in we had a string of lights on our gutter, my neighbor on one side had their roof outlined in lights and the other neighbor had a nativity scene. Over the years we added to our displays. My neighbors learned early on that I was out of control. I put lights on my roof, I designed arches wrapped in red and white lights to go over the walkway out front. (Which my neighbor copied) so now we have over 100 feet of arches to walk through as neighbors enjoy our display.
Along with the arches we also have candy canes that go down the driveway, down both walkways, and up my neighbor's driveway which amounts to about 140 feet of candy canes. Four years ago a neighbor around the corner from us sent me a Christmas card that explained they love watching our display grow over the years and she nick named our display Candy Cane Lane. That’s where the name came from. Since then I added lights over my driveway -- all-in-all there are between 25,000 and 30,000 lights on my house alone. My neighbors join in on the fun -- I guess if you can’t beat them then is best to join them.
Some of my favorite stories that make it all worthwhile:
One day I was looking out my window and I saw a young woman about 21 with a small child. As I always do I grabbed some candy canes and went outside. As I was talking to the young woman she explained to me she has been coming to my house since she was a little girl and now she is bringing her little girl.
A mother brought her son to my house every year to see the lights and try and to get a picture with Santa. One year the boy's dad brought him along with his grandmother and aunt. He didn’t want to be in the picture with Santa. I coaxed him into getting in the picture. That January the dad passed away. The picture I coaxed the boy into being in was the last family picture they had with the dad. The following December during an ice storm and older woman using her cane spelled out "THANK YOU" with a smiley face in the snow next to my car. I found out later that older woman was the mother of the man that passed away the previous year.
My Story
In the summer of 2016 I was having issues with fluid retention due to medication I was prescribed to control my chronic myeloid leukemia which I was diagnosed with in November of 2013. You wouldn’t think there was a silver lining to having cancer, but for me there was. Because of the issues I had with retaining fluid, I had multiple scans and procedures to remove fluid from my stomach.
In November of 2016, I was in the emergency room because I was having difficulty breathing. They did a CAT scan of my chest and noticed something strange in the upper portion of my stomach. So they did a scan of my stomach and what they found was unfamiliar to the ER team. They sent the scans to my family doctor and my Oncologist. They were also unfamiliar with what they were seeing on the scan, but knew there was a problem so they sent the scans to a colleague of theirs. When he looked at them he suggested I go see Dr. Bowne at Hahnemann Hospital as soon as possible.
I was diagnosed with Appendix Cancer/Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. I had surgery in December of 2016. I Spent 22 days in the hospital including 7 day in ICU. Presently I’m doing well -- having some issues but working through them.
My goal in having a fundraiser is of course to help raise money for research. But for me, more importantly, is to raise awareness of this disease. Hopefully a person with early detection wouldn’t have to go through what I had to go through. I can’t image what my family and friends went through during that time. If doing what I’m doing helps save one person, one family from going through what I and my family and friends went through, it will be worth it. When people ask me how I’m doing, I always respond “It’s a great day to be alive!”
